Tofo to Maputo - August 14th

August 14th, 2008:

Short: Beachside breakfast, Drive to Maputo, Dinner, Niki and Mortimer go clubbing!

Long: After enjoying another beachside breakfast, we left Tofo this morning for Inhambane, another nearby coastal village. We snapped a few pictures of Inhambane’s bay and of the city, but did not stay long. The drive down to Maputo was pretty quick as most of the roads are maintained well. We also witnessed another terrible accident, but this is becoming commonplace at this point. We also snapped a quick picture of a John Deere tractor for dad!

We arrived into Maputo as the sun was setting and were able to find a hostel, Base backpackers, with secure parking. We walked along the water for a bit, but decided to tour the city a little more tomorrow morning, but our first impressions of Maputo are good ones. The city is located on the coast and has a relaxed European vibe. For dinner, we found a decent restaurant showing the Olympics and then headed back to the hostel. I decided to catch up on some administrative stuff (Relocation fiasco in Boston), while Niki and Mortimer decided to check Maputo’s nightlife. They visited two clubs and arrived back at 3am. At the first club they met the son of the Swiss Ambassador to Mozambique who then showed them another club before bringing them home. Randomly, Nikolai met a British girl that, as it turns out, he knew from his days at LSE.
