Short: Mexican breakfast!!!, Morning of relaxation and errands, See “Wanted” at the cinema, Meet Melissa and Rohan for dinner, Find a campground
Long: Last night I was excited to learn from Melissa that the Nairobi coffee house offers a menu that includes breakfast burritos. Mexican cuisine is my favorite, and is rare in Africa, and therefore we made the fifteen minute walk to the café this morning. I wasn’t disappointed. I enjoyed a full Mexican breakfast complete with guacamole. While at breakfast I purchased a newspaper, and spend an hour catching up on Kenyan news. I learned that over the last few days Kenya has had massive issues with violence at their schools. Over 300 schools had been affected by rioting students who had burned down dorms and other buildings in retaliation for a number of issues that included: mock exams, poor food, tough administration, etc. A student was killed in one of the fires that had been set at a school that was only a few minutes walk from the café we were at.

We have mixed impressions of Nairobi thus far. While the city is fairly modern, and offers most of the services you would ever need, it is also considered to be fairly unsafe. You need to be careful, particularly at night. The newspaper included a number of articles related to gang murders and carjackings, although most of these were confined to poorer areas of the city. Interestingly, I read an article about a man who was caught stealing a scooter in a village outside of Nairobi. The man was stopped by villagers, told to say his last prayers, and then stoned to death. We are told this type of justice is common in the villages.

The rest of today was extremely lazy. We used Rohan’s apartment as a base to update the blog and run errands. In the afternoon we loaded up the car and headed to Westfield, an upscale mall in the city, to see “Wanted” the movie. In the evening we joined Melissa, Rohan, and a few others for dinner at a Lebanese restaurant and then went searching for our campground. Unfortunately after a brief drive we found our guidebook was a little too old. The campground had been moved. After short drive though, we were happy to find that the new campground was located in a secure compound within a nicer suburb of Nairobi. Unfortunately, we also found that our tent is not completely waterproof. It had rained in the morning, and we had to use plastic bags to keep us separated from the soggy mattress. We are hoping the worst of the rain is behind us!
