Nairobi to Nakuru - July 24th

July 24th, 2008:

Short: Another Mexican breakfast!, We are placed under arrest!, We are let go!, Visit Downtown Nairobi, Can’t escape the rain, Decide against Lake Nakuru, Meet the nice owners of Kembi Campground

Long: It was too difficult to pass up another Mexican breakfast and therefore we returned to the Nairobi coffee house again this morning. After sorting pictures for the blog at the cafe we ventured into downtown Nairobi to run some errands before then heading west to Lake Nakuru.
As we navigated downtown we saw a police officer with an AK-47 running towards our car from across the street. He flagged us down and informed us that we were coming out of a one-way street in the wrong direction. He was right. He told us, “You are under arrest and must go to the police station”. To make a long story short, we once again had a discussion similar to the one we had in Tanzania, and left paying the officer $40. After driving downtown we used the internet at a café and then began driving west towards Lake Nakuru. Shortly outside of the city we climbed in elevation and ran into fairly dense fog and moderate rain. Thus far in Kenya, we have been unable to escape the rain.

After an hour the clouds cleared up and we enjoyed decent roads all the way to Nakuru. We arrived at around 5pm and intended to stay in the park, but found that the entrance fees had been increased. It would have cost us approximately $50 to stay the night in the park, and having recently seen most of the large mammals and flamingos, we opted for a few pictures of the lake taken outside of the park, and then headed for a campground twenty km’s south of Nakuru. After making dinner we spent the evening playing pool and darts at the camp’s bar. The camp’s owners, a couple (We unfortunately can’t remember their names!), are native Kenyan’s who have been slowly building the campground over the last few years. The camp is located on their farm and their primary business is agriculture and cattle.
